I wanted to learn Flash so that I could build some simple demos illustrating various concepts on my game programming pages. Unfortunately it looks like it costs $500 to get the flash developer kit! I should try Java instead.

Gamemaker doesn't help at all. I want to make technical diagrams (with animation / interactivity) for my web pages. Gamemaker produces simple Windows games.

I've been playing with OpenLaszlo (www.openlaszlo.org) for a little while making some simple maps and paths (why I'm at your site). Its pretty easy to get started and renders its output using the flash plugin. Rob :)

Check out my comments on Flash over at my blog. There's a lot of free, programmer-friendly options for Flash. Great place to start is OSFlash.org.
